What is IPL?
IPL, or intense pulsed light therapy, is a non-invasive, non-ablative treatment that uses high-intensity pulses of light to treat a broad range of skin problems. It is particularly good at improving the appearance of redness caused by rosacea or other skin disorders. At Renew Laser Center, we utilize the Ellipse® Nordlys system for our IPL treatments. The Nordlys is considered by many skin care experts to be the most versatile platform of its kind, featuring sub-millisecond pulses that expand the types of treatments we can perform.
IPL with the Nordlys works in much the same way that many lasers do — it directs light energy at the skin. This energy penetrates the uppermost layer of the skin, targeting the cells in the deepest layers while leaving the surface unharmed. This light is absorbed by pigmentation in the skin, destroying it. Because lasers only deliver one wavelength of light, they can only target a small range of skin cells. IPL has the advantage of delivering multiple wavelengths of light in each pulse, targeting a variety of the skin structures and different pigmentations that cause many skin problems.
What Can it be Used to Treat?
IPL can be used to treat a wide variety of skin problems, including:
- Sun damage
- Uneven pigmentation
- Stretch marks.
Because IPL works by damaging skin cells, it stimulates healing that isn’t limited to treating specific skin problems. After a series of IPL treatments, your skin will be smoother, softer, and more youthful looking.
What can I Expect from the Procedure?
Each IPL treatment session with the Nordlys system usually takes no longer than 20 minutes, so you can undergo it during your lunch break and be back at work with time to spare. Many patients find the procedure to be tolerable; the sensation of IPL treatment is, at worst, likened to a light pinch or the snap of a rubber band.
While some results can be obtained after just one IPL treatment, we recommend that patients undergo a course of 2-4 sessions spaced 3-4 weeks apart in order to achieve dramatic changes.
There is little to no downtime following treatment, so you can get on with your life and back to your daily routine as soon as you leave our office. Do keep in mind that your skin will be more sensitive than usual after treatment, so you will have to avoid exposure to direct sunlight in the days and weeks following it. Common side effects include pinkness and the sensation of a mild sunburn. Less common side effects are hair loss and bruising, which occurs in 10% of patients.
